Beattie receives specialist dementia home care from CIC. This has helped her to remain independent in her own home and continue to pursue a life-long hobby…

84 year old Beattie has always loved the great outdoors and when younger, was a member of the Ramblers Association. However, in later life when she developed dementia, she became increasingly isolated and housebound.

Beattie was referred to CIC's EachStep specialist dementia home care service in Manchester by her local Community Psychiatric Nurse. Beattie was assessed by a Dianne, a member of the EachStep team, who found out about Beattie's life, what is important to her and the support she would like to recieve. In doing so, Dianne learned about her love of getting out and about and arranged to take her out twice a week to a local park.

This has become the highlight of Beattie's week and made a huge difference to her life, improving her overall happiness and wellbeing. Asked how going this has helped her, Beattie explains, "I look forward to my walks with Dianne so much. Its independence isn't it? And I'm used to that!"

CIC have created a unique accredited BTEC qualification in Dementia Care. Sarah Whitmarsh, Linda McCann and Janet Duggan, from our St Patricks Care Home in Widnes, tell us how the course has enhanced the care they give.

Linda: "At our home, St. Patricks, we are like a big family. We are all passionate about giving all of our residents the best possible care and that is why we wanted to take part in the dementia BTEC qualification."

Sarah: "Working in a dementia service can be difficult, but with proper planning and good training, you can overcome these challenges and deliver great care. Whilst I have always empathised and cared for the people I support, the course has given me a better appreciation of dementia and how it affects the people we support which I have applied to my role."

Janet: "Since completing the course, I've really taken a step back to think about how I can use the insight I gained when studying for the qualification in the care that I give. I think everyone who takes part in the course will always have person centered care at the forefront of their mind."
