Floating Support

CIC floating support service for people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health concerns.CIC's Floating Support services offer adults and young people, with a wide range of needs, the practical support they need to live active and independent lives within their communities. Our aim is to deliver a service which gives people real choice and control over how they live their lives, fostering independence and support to achieve personal goals and aspirations.

We understand that traditional residential support services do not suit everyone. To lead the independent life they choose, some people may only require support for a few hours a day or a week, depending on their needs.

    • Damian's story

Damian Brett is supported by the Floating Support Team in Leicester. Here he tells us how with the their backing, he found himself competing in the 2008 Special Olympics!...

“I’ve always loved swimming and my support team would often accompany me to my local pool to do some lengths, helping me keep fit and have fun too,” says Damian. “Soon, they started to suggest that perhaps I should look to taking part in the Special Olympics, which was something I had ever even dreamed of doing, but was really excited at the thought of.”

“The team contacted the organisers and I was over the moon when I was selected to take part! To make sure that I was in peak physical condition, I increased the amount of support I received from CIC so that I could begin an intensive training regime. Not only did I up my swimming practice, but I also started the gym to build up my overall fitness and strength.”

“During the Special Olympics, I stayed at the Athletes Village, which was actually in my home city of Leicester. It was great fun making friends with the other athletes. I was absolutely delighted to win a gold medal in the 50m butterfly and collect two bronze medals in the 25m butterfly and the 50m freestyle relay. I came 5th in the backstroke which I was really pleased about, as it was my toughest event.”

“All of my family, friends and the team at Floating Support were proud of me, and most importantly, was proud of myself. It was definitely worth all of the hard work and I can’t wait until the next event!”

    • Adam's Story

Adam Swinfield has been supported by CIC’s Floating Support Team in Leicester for three years. With their support, Adam achieved his goal of passing his driving test!

“When we first began supporting Adam, he was very shy and relied on a lot on his family for direction and assurance,” explains Jazz Gahir, CIC Floating Support Manager. “Even when his support team gave him a choice of activities to take part in, his answer was always “I don’t mind”. Straight away, we knew we had to work closely with Adam to help him become more independent and grow in confidence.”

With a lot of interaction and guidance, Adam soon blossomed. He became much more self-assured and his ability to make his own decisions improved dramatically. So much so that after only a few months, Adam announced that he wanted to start take driving lessons!

“Everyone knew Adam was mad about cars and motorbikes, so we were all delighted that he felt confident enough to begin to start learning to drive – on his own without any support!" says Jazz. "We were all so chuffed when he passed, it was a real testament to how far Adam had come, and of what can be achieved with just a little bit of help and support.”
