CIC have created a unique accredited BTEC qualification in Dementia Care. Sarah Whitmarsh, Linda McCann and Janet Duggan, from our St Patricks Care Home in Widnes, tell us how the course has enhanc...

Linda: "At our home, St. Patricks, we are like a big family. We are all passionate about giving all of our residents the best possible care and that is why we wanted to take part in the dementia BTEC qualification."

Sarah: "Working in a dementia service can be difficult, but with proper planning and good training, you can overcome these challenges and deliver great care. Whilst I have always empathised and cared for the people I support, the course has given me a better appreciation of dementia and how it affects the people we support which I have applied to my role."

Janet: "Since completing the course, I've really taken a step back to think about how I can use the insight I gained when studying for the qualification in the care that I give. I think everyone who takes part in the course will always have person centered care at the forefront of their mind."

In September 2005, having seriously injured herself in a fall, Ellen Daley was discharged from hospital to Kemp Lodge care home, Waterloo. Ill and immobile she looked to have a dependent future. Fa...

The staff at the service dedicated themselves to truly understanding Ellen, her abilities and her hopes. Home manager Edna Jenson explains, "We knew how important it was for Ellen to be independent and therefore at every opportunity we worked with her to build up her strength and stability. Although Ellen's goal was always to move back home, she also really enjoyed her time here. She became a true member of the Kemp Lodge community, making friends and getting involved in all of our activities."

Ellen's journey back home was the culmination of her own great efforts and those of her loving husband Eddie, her family members, staff at the service and health professionals, who all together devised a plan for Ellen to make the big step back home.

Ellen tells us, "I credit Kemp Lodge for it all. They got me here. They really went out of their way to help me and we all got on so well. It's great being back home but I do miss the staff and my friends at Kemp Lodge."

  • Anne's Story

Anne Rigby lives at Eccleston Court nursing home, St Helens. She explains how their nursing care helped her recover from serious surgery into a more independent life.

Anne Rigby joined Eccleston Court in August 2006 following surgery for cancer of the tongue. Because Anne was very ill at the time, her daughters looked for her nursing home and immediately decided Eccleston would be the place for their mum. Anne was delighted with their choice, "From the first day I joined, I liked it. I felt comfortable and knew I could ask for whatever help I wanted."

Since moving in Anne's health has improved dramatically and she has become much more independent, something she credits to her own "perseverance and the support of staff and my family".

Importantly for Anne, Eccleston Court is based in her local area and has strong roots with its local community. In fact, since coming to live in the home she has met a number of friends who she has known in her past. Her family are also able to visit at any time which fits around their own work and family commitments.

Anne enjoys the activities which are arranged in the home. She says, "The activity coordinators are really nice. They organise lovely days out and parties in the home. My favourite events are the bingo evenings which are lots of fun."

Anne regularly attends the resident meetings within the home and is able to discuss her wishes and make suggestions about the home. She has also taken responsibility in the home, becoming a signatory for money raised for resident's activities in Eccleston Court. "I enjoy helping out and acting in the interests of other residents here. It is great that we all have our own say."
